Medical Images: Sources and Solutions: Home

Copyright is a frequent concern for individuals looking for Medical Images. Some images are free of copyright restrictions, either because the original copyright owner has decided to make the images open-access, or because the images are old enough that copyright on them has expired. Copyright owners who decide to share their images freely often use a special type of license called a Creative Commons license. The Creative Commons license describes who may use an image - and for what purpose - without having to arrange permission to use the image.

When an image is still subjected to copyright, the best practice is to contact the owner of the copyright on the image to arrange for permission. Sometimes this may require contacting an artist or author, other times the publisher. A fee or attribution may be required.
